SOUTHEAST MICHIGAN — A powerful winter storm is expected to hit southeastern Michigan Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service.

Snow will begin falling sometime around 3 p.m. Wednesday and continue through the nighttime hours, according to the weather service.

Forecasters believe the most intense period of snowfall will be between 7 p.m. and 1 a.m.
Areas along and north of Michigan 59 can expect higher snowfall totals while areas south of Interstate 94 toward the Ohio border may see rain and sleet cut into snow totals, according to the weather service.

Forecasters expect 6-8 inches of fresh snow across the Detroit area and the Thumb region, while areas near the Ohio border should see 3-5 inches of snow with light icing, according to the weather service.
The storm should move out of the region by early Thursday morning, but forecasters warned the snow will affect the morning's commute, according to the weather service.
Thursday and Friday will be dry with highs near freezing, before another round of snow moves into the area this weekend, according to the weather service.
