Detroit Mayor Announces Return Of Some City Workers

​​Mayor Mike Duggan announced the return of 200 workers to the city's general services department.

DETROIT, MI — Mayor Mike Duggan on Tuesday outlined the first city services that will reactivate under new safe workplace standards announced Monday and the timeline for when additional services will return.

Duggan announced the return of 200 workers to the city's general services department, which includes some municipal workers.

The city also outlines safety guidelines it is taking to ensure the safety of those returning to work.

"Our goal is that eight hours a day you're working for the city, you are just as safe as your are with your weekend activities at home," Duggan said. "That's a high standard, but we're trying to hit it."

The plan announced by Duggan on Tuesday includes six parts:

  • Initial testing of each city employee for the coronavirus
  • Daily employee temperature check, health screening, and monitoring
  • Workplace distancing and hygiene protocols
  • Mandatory use of masks and other necessary PPE
  • Thorough and frequent cleaning of work-sites and vehicles
  • Ensuring a continuous adequate stockpile of necessary PPE and sanitizing supplies

"This is how we stopped the spread of COVID-19 at the Detroit Police Department," Duggan said. "If their temperature is above 100 degrees, we'll refer them to medical care. We won't let them come on to the site and interact with our other employees."
