Detroit PD Involved In 4th Officer-Involved Shooting In July

The latest incident involved the fatal shooting of a man armed with swords and daggers, according to reports.

DETROIT, MI — Officers from the Detroit Police Department late on Thursday shot and killed a man who was reportedly armed with a sword and daggers — the fourth officer-involved shooting the department has been involved in in July.

Thursday night's shooting took place near the corner of Grand River and Meyer, according to WXYZ. The officers opened fire on the man after he ran toward them while armed after they told him to drop his weapons, the station reported.

The man, who was in his late 20s, died at a local hospital following the shooting, WXYZ reported.

Detroit Police Chief James Craig told ClickOnDetroit that officers were on their way to a separate call when they saw the man, wielding a sword in the middle of the Meyers-Grand River intersection.

Officers used a Tazer on the man, ClickOnDetroit reported, but it was of little use. The man threw a weapon at an officer, hitting him just below the eye, according to ClickOnDetroit, before shots were fired. The officer was transported to a local hospital for treatment, ClickOnDetroit reported.

The first officer-involved shooting the department was involved in this month took place July 10, when police were following up on an investigation into a shooting at a Fourth of July block party, Fox2Detroit reported.

Another shooting took place July 23, when an armed suspect of a homicide from over the weekend prior was shot and killed by city of Detroit police officers.

Fox2Detroit reported that the third police shooting took place July 26, when a man was shot multiple times by police and is still recovering.
