DETROIT — A popular food magazine says pizza lovers must visit a Detroit pizzeria.

Buddy's Pizza, home of the original Detroit-style pizza, was ranked No. 4 on Food and Wine's list of "10 Must-Visit Pizzerias in the United States."

"Detroit-style pizza has had a boom across the country in the last decade, and the original name in Motor City is Buddy’s, revving since 1946," editors with the magazine said.

The Detroit pizza maker is best known for their Detroit-style square pizzas, typically topped with pepperoni, brick cheese and sauce. The pizzeria was founded at the corner of Six Mile Road and Conant Street in Detroit in 1946. Before that, it was a speakeasy known as Buddy’s Rendezvous.

Since then, the pizzeria has grown to 23 locations, with most in the Detroit area. There are also spots in Grand Rapids, Okemos and Portage.

While Buddy's is best known for its square pizzas, it did test new round pizzas at two Michigan locations earlier this year. It was the first time in the pizzeria's 79-year history it made round pizzas.

The original Buddy's restaurant in Detroit has been received very well on Google, scoring a 4.6/5 with more than 3,600 reviews.

"One of the best pizzas I’ve ever had. The cheese, the crust, the sauce. I also got wings as an app. Also very delicious. The service was great, the atmosphere felt nostalgic," one reviewer wrote.

"I've been coming here since I was a kid and it's still just as authentic and perfect as it was 30 years ago," another reviewer wrote.

"Detroit is known for its pizza and if you are visiting Detroit or passing by, and you plan to get pizza, this is your one stop," another reviewer wrote.
