Detroit Public Schools, Teachers Agree To New Contract
Teachers were threatening to strike without a new deal that includes salary increases to help keep up with inflation, the union said.
DETROIT — Detroit Public Schools and its teachers agreed to a new contract Sunday, according to a news release.
While details were still being worked out, teachers were expected to return to work Monday, one week before Detroit Public Schools open for the 2023-24 year. Officials were expected to begin voting on the new contract Monday.
The teachers were threatening to strike without a new deal that includes salary increases to help keep up with inflation, cost of living and quality of life. As of Monday, the starting salary for new teachers in the district was $51,000.

"All educators are expected to return to work Monday, Aug. 21, while students’ first day of school is Monday, Aug. 28," the Detroit Federation of Teachers said in a statement. "We look forward to continuing our work and commitment to providing our students and families the best possible educational services and opportunities."
