Detroit Releases Nursing Home Coronavirus Reports

Detroit will now provide frequent updates for the number of coronavirus cases reported in its nursing homes.

DETROIT, MI — Detroit has started releasing the number of reported coronavirus cases in its nursing homes in a move to be more transparent with the public, officials announced Monday.

A new feature released by the city is breaking down how many cases of the virus have been reported in nursing homes throughout the city. That information, as of Sunday evening, is listed below.

"We had a chance to speak to all the nursing home directors to let them know this was coming and they were all really supportive of us being extremely transparent," Denise Fair, the chief health officer for the Detroit Health Department, said Monday in a news conference.

Fair said the next step is to test employees working at nursing homes across the city, something she said the city plans to make mandatory.

"I suspect that our interventions will help to slow the spread of COVID-19, because again, these nursing home residents are in congregate settings," Fair said. "So, it's really important for the staff to be tested."

Fair on Monday also announced the health department's most recent coronavirus data for the city. As of 2 p.m. Monday, the Detroit Health Department has reported 8,686 confirmed cases of the coronavirus. The city also has reported that 947 people have died from the virus.
