Officials said the rupture left more than four feet of icy water covering much of the neighborhood's streets, sidewalks and yards.

DETROIT — Officials have rescued 54 adults, 22 children and 12 pets from their southwest Detroit homes amid flooding after a massive water main ruptured Monday, according to police.
The 54-inch water main burst around 2 a.m. Monday morning near Beard and Rowan Streets, in the area of Livernois in southwest Detroit, according to the Great Lakes Water Authority.
The rupture left more than four feet of icy water covering much of the neighborhood’s streets, sidewalks and yards, according to officials.

Officials believe 150-200 homes were affected by the flooding. Nearly 80 city employees and community volunteers went door to door to check on families affected by the water main break. Rescue crews used boats and construction trucks to rescue the families.
On Tuesday, crews brought in three pumps to help remove the water from the streets, so they can start a site excavation, officials said.

Once crews get a better look at the damaged pipe, they will be able to determine exactly what kind of repairs are necessary, officials said.
Meanwhile, residents in the area without heat or power can stay at the Sonesta Extended Stay Suites hotel while the cleanup continues. Officials will also provide the hotel guests with food.
Additionally, residents affected by the break will be compensated for any uninsured repairs, such as new furnaces or water heaters. The GLWA and the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department will split the cost, officials said.
Officials are expected to release more information sometime Tuesday afternoon.
Residents impacted by the flooding and need temporary housing or experienced damage from the flooding can call the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department (DWSD) emergency line at (313) 774-5261.
