Off-Duty Cop, Girlfriend Die In Detroit Crash
A crash killed a Detroit officer, his girlfriend and injured his 11-year-old child Thursday morning.

DETROIT, MI — A 27-year-old off-duty Detroit police officer and a his girlfriend were killed in a crash Thursday morning on Woodward Avenue in Detroit. His 11-year-old daughter was also in the backseat of the car and is currently recovering in the hospital.
According to WDIV, they were traveling northbound on Woodward Avenue near the State Fair intersection when they crashed into a pole at about 40 mph. Police are investigating the crash and have not yet determined the cause.
Detroit Police Chief James Craig identified the officer Thursday afternoon as 27-year-old James Hearn. The Detroit Police Officer spent just four and a half years on the force before the crash.

"We lose a lot of the good ones. James was the ultimate community police officer," Craig said.
Craig said Hearn was assigned to the 12th precinct and excelled in just a few short years. Earlier this year, Hearn was honored for saving someone's life when he went into a burning building.
