FBI Issues Statement On Recent University Of Michigan Threat

"There is no current or pending threat to the University of Michigan community from this individual," a portion of the FBI's statement read.

MICHIGAN — The FBI released a statement Monday regarding a threat made to the University of Michigan over the weekend.

Agents along with the assistance of the University of Michigan Division of Public Safety and Security, said they identified the person responsible for posting an online threat Sunday against the women at the school.

Special agents from the FBI’s Baltimore Division, which covers the entire states of Maryland and Delaware, contacted the person, who has been cooperative with law enforcement, according to the FBI. During the interview, agents said they assessed the person had neither the means nor the opportunity to carry out the threat.

"There is no current or pending threat to the University of Michigan community from this individual," a portion of the statement from the FBI read. "Each and every threat brought to our attention is taken seriously and is investigated to determine whether the threat was made in violation of state or federal law."

According to the FBI, it is still collecting and reviewing evidence in the case. While that process is ongoing, the agency said it cannot provide any additional information—including the identity of the person.

"As always, we encourage the public to remain vigilant and to promptly report suspicious activities that could represent a threat to public safety," the FBI's statement said.

DPSS said it will continue to have a visible presence on campus.

"We understand that this threat was very frightening and upsetting to people. U-M students can seek the university’s Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) services, and the Faculty and Staff Counseling and Consultation Office (FASCCO) is available for faculty and staff or Michigan Medicine Office of Counseling and Workplace Resilience for Michigan Medicine faculty and staff," the university said in a statement.
