Girl Killed Seeking Help After Dad's Drunk Driving Crash
The incident impacted many lives, Michigan State Police Lt. Mike Shaw explained.

ROMULUS, MI — Police say a 7-year-old girl was struck and killed as she tried to get help after her father crashed in a drunk driving accident on I-94 in Romulus over the weekend. Michigan State Police Lt. Mike Shaw said DeSandra Thomas sent text messages to police about her father's crash before she was struck on I-94 near Detroit Metropolitan Airport early Sunday.
Shaw said the girl was unable to be located by the time she was struck. The woman who hit her called police to say she might have hit a pedestrian. She is reportedly not expected to face charges.
"You have a dad that now lost his daughter because of drinking and driving. A mom that lost her daughter. A poor lady that was driving down 94, that will have to live with the fact that she struck a child for the rest of her life," Shaw said in a Twitter update this week. “Even the first responders out on the scene, we try to act like we’re big tough guys and girls but when we get involved in cases like this with kids it affects us throughout the rest of our careers.”
