Latest MI Vaccine, Mask Mandates: See Who's Requiring It

MICHIGAN — The highly infectious delta variant of COVID-19 is spreading throughout the U.S. and Michigan, spurring a surge in new cases and hospitalizations. In response, many companies are issuing new mask policies for staff or customers.

Michiganders in 33 counties that have a high or substantial level of COVID-19 spread should be wearing masks while indoors, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced this week. Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has said the state is not likely to introduce another mask mandate.

Here's the level of spread in metro Detroit counties, according to the latest CDC data:

Wayne County: Moderate

Oakland County: Substantial

We're tracking where Michiganders will need to wear a mask and where they'll need a vaccine to work. Check out the list below and tell us in the comments if you know of other places requiring either masks or vaccines.

Here are the latest mandates announced in Michigan:

Walmart

The company says it's following CDC guidance that fully vaccinated people wear masks indoors in areas of substantial or high transmission. The company is also strongly urging all employees to get vaccinated against the virus as soon as possible.

McDonald's

The fast food giant has mandated both employees and customers wear masks while inside at their restaurants in areas of high and substantial transmission.

Home Depot

All Home Depot employees must wear masks while working, the company announced this week. Customers will be asked to wear masks and complimentary masks will be available at the door for shoppers.

Target

Target will again require employees to wear face masks in areas of substantial and high transmission, the retail giant announced Monday. The new policy went into effect Tuesday. Read more here.

Kroger

The grocery chain is asking both customers and shoppers to wear masks while inside stores. Employees who received the COVID-19 vaccine will receive a one-time $100 bonus.

University of Michigan and Michigan State University
The University of Michigan and Michigan State University announced Friday that they both will require all students, staff, faculty to receive the COVID-19 vaccine ahead of the fall 2021 semester. (Read more via Michigan Advance)

Henry Ford Health System

COVID-19 vaccinations are required for all workers and the requirement takes effect Sept. 10. It applies to all team members, students, volunteers and contractors. (Read more)

Beaumont Health

Beaumont Health is making the COVID-19 vaccine mandatory for all employees and providers who practice medicine or work at Beaumont facilities, the health system announced. The mandate will go into effect after the Food and Drug Administration fully approves one or more of the current COVID-19 vaccines, which is expected to take place later this year, the health system said in its announcement.
