Metro Detroit Aug. 5 Primary Voter Guide, Key Races

METRO DETROIT — On Aug. 5, voters across metro Detroit will determine candidates for several key races, including mayoral races in Detroit, Hamtramck and Dearborn Heights.

Polls open at 7 a.m., and close at 8 p.m. in Metro Detroit.

Nine candidates are vying to succeed Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan, who decided not to seek re-election after three terms, and is running for governor.

Dearborn Heights Mayor Bill Bazzi and Hamtramck Mayor Amer Ghalib were selected for ambassador positions by President Trump. Four candidates are running for each mayoral position in Dearborn Heights and Hamtramck.

Voters will also decide commission seats for several communities, including Plymouth, where nine candidates are running for four seats.

If you're planning to vote, here's what you need to know

You can register up until 8 p.m. on Election Day at your local clerk’s office, but it’s best to register sooner rather than later.

You can also register online, at a Secretary of State branch, or in person at your city, township or county clerk’s office.

Early voting is open now and runs through Aug. 3.

You can also vote using an absentee ballot. To vote using an absentee ballot, you'll need to apply for one at your local clerk's office.

All online or mail-in requests for absentee ballots must be received by 5 p.m. on Aug. 1.
