DETROIT — Democrat Shri Thanedar won the race to represent Michigan's 13th U.S. Congressional District, which includes most of Detroit and numerous downriver communities, according to the Associated Press and New York Times.

Thanedar won a tightly contested primary to face Republican Martell Bivings for the heavily favored Democratic seat that represents Detroit and numerous downriver communities.

Thanedar currently represents the Northeast portion of Detroit in the Michigan State House of Representatives.

His victory means Detroit, the nation’s largest majority Black city, will be without a Black representative for the first time in nearly 70 years.
