Michigan Is 2018’s 9th Most Vulnerable State to Identity Theft

Wallethub released its 2018 report and found that in Michigan, we're more likely to be susceptible to fraud and identity theft. Here's how.

MICHIGAN — As a Michigander, you’re at a higher risk than most other states for identity theft.

With businesses such as Adidas, Best Buy, Delta, Kmart, Macy’s and Sears experiencing data breaches this year, the free credit-monitoring website WalletHub today released its report on 2018’s States Most Vulnerable to Identity Theft & Fraud and found that Michigan is in the top 10 of most vulnerable to identity theft and fraud.

To determine where Americans are most susceptible to such crimes, WalletHub compared the 50 states and the District of Columbia across ten key metrics. The data set ranges from identity-theft complaints per capita to average loss amount due to fraud.

Here’s the numbers they found in Michigan:

  • 1st – Identity-Theft Complaints per Capita
  • 22nd – Average Loss Amount Due to Online Identity Theft
  • 6th – Fraud & Other Complaints per Capita
  • 18th – State Security-Freeze Laws for Minors’ Credit Reports
  • 1st – Identity-Theft Passport Program
  • 24th – Persons Arrested for Fraud per Capita
  • 18th – Compliance with REAL ID Act

In Michigan, you'll find the most identity theft complaints per capita, the report showed.

Nevada is where the worst identity theft happens, followed by Florida, New Jersey, Delaware and California.

Michigan is ninth in the nation, the report found. Meanwhile, Hawaii was found the least vulnerable to fraud.
