Michigan Coronavirus Case Total Crosses The 56,000 Mark

Over 400 new cases of the coronavirus were confirmed Thursday, bringing Michigan's overall case total to more than 56,000.

MICHIGAN — The number of confirmed cases of the coronavirus has crossed the 56,000 mark in Michigan after more than 400 new cases were confirmed Thursday.

State health officials reported 406 new cases of the virus had been confirmed as of 10 a.m. Thursday. The update brings the state's overall case total to 56,014 — the eighth most among states in the U.S., according to World Health Organization data.

Michigan also reported another 38 deaths due to the coronavirus on Thursday, bringing the state's coronavirus death toll to 5,372. Michigan has reported the fifth most deaths in the U.S.

Numbers are sometimes altered as public health officials investigate individual cases. Case numbers sometimes do not match numbers provided by respective counties due to several variables, including testing done by private organizations that report to either the state or the county but not both.

Deaths are reported by health care providers and recorded by local health departments. Other data, such as the number of individuals who have recovered at the state level, are released on Saturdays.

Thursday's update comes a day after the U.S. reached 100,000 coronavirus caused deaths. The country leads the world in both coronavirus cases and deaths.

However, despite those numbers, the state has seen cause for optimism in recent weeks as the numbers of new cases has trended downward. As a result, parts of the state economy have reopened and local municipalities are taking measures to assist small businesses while the businesses themselves just try to stay afloat.

In Plymouth, the Penn Theatre has taken an unorthodox approach to being able to tread water as the state goes through the crisis. The theater announced Thursday that beginning on Friday it would begin a curbside concessions program for families having move nights at home.

Meanwhile, state health officials have made strides in providing residents with chances to determine if they have the coronavirus so they can get a jump start on the recovery process.

On Thursday, the state announced 16 new CVS Health coronavirus drive-thru test sites. The new sites are part of a nationwide response to the coronavirus by CVS Health, and completes the company's commitment to establish 1,000 test sites by the end of May.
