Numbers are sometimes altered as public health officials investigate individual cases. Case numbers sometimes do not match numbers provided by respective counties due to several variables, including testing done by private organizations that report to either the state or the county but not both.

Deaths are reported by health care providers and recorded by local health departments. Other data, such as the number of individuals who have recovered at the state level, are released on Saturdays.

Coronavirus Impact on Michigan

While the number of new coronavirus cases is trending downward, the impact caused by the coronavirus continues to be felt.

Throughout Michigan, businesses effected by the governor's executive order requesting the closure of non-essential businesses struggle. In some cases, businesses have violated the order and reopened. The moves have prompted the question: Who enforces the governor's executive orders?

Small businesses aren't alone in their struggles. Larger businesses have been impacted, too. The retailer chain J.C. Penny recently announced it was filing for bankruptcy in part due to struggles caused by the coronavirus. Michigan has 33 stores, including locations in Troy, Dearborn, Brighton and Canton. It is unclear if those specific stores will be affected.

Michigan Coronavirus Numbers For The Last 10 Days

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer told Michigan residents Monday that numbers reported by the state health department were showing signs for cautious optimism. Generally speaking, the state is reporting fewer new cases daily.

A good representation of the changes the state has seen in its coronavirus case reports is a comparison to what was reported in April. For the first 10 days of May, Michigan averaged just over 478 new confirmed coronavirus cases a day. During the first 10 days of April, the state averaged over 1,516 new cases reported each day.
