Michigan Coronavirus Cases Reach 50,000, Over 4,800 Deaths
Michigan health officials reported 497 new coronavirus cases Friday and 38 new deaths resulting from the virus.
MICHIGAN — Nearly 500 new cases of the coronavirus were reported Friday by state health officials, bringing the statewide total to over 50,000.
Officials reported 497 new coronavirus cases and 38 new deaths resulting from the virus. The numbers bring statewide totals to 50,079 and 4,825, respectively.
The numbers are much lower than the more than 1,000 new cases reported Thursday, which officials said was the result of a backlog of coronavirus test results.

Numbers are sometimes altered as public health officials investigate individual cases. Case numbers sometimes do not match numbers provided by respective counties due to several variables, including testing done by private organizations that report to either the state or the county but not both.
Deaths are reported by health care providers and recorded by local health departments. Other data, such as the number of individuals who have recovered at the state level, are released on Saturdays.
Coronavirus Trends
State health officials on Thursday said a significant uptick in reported coronavirus cases was the result of a backlog of testing results and expanded testing for the virus around the state.
Thursday's number of new cases was the highest the state had reported since April 29. However, those numbers decreased on Friday.
