The penalty for scaling the national monument is a $1,000 fine.

MICHIGAN — A 19-year-old Michigan man was arrested over the weekend for climbing Mount Rushmore, according to reports.

Zachary Schossau, of South Rockwood, was arrested Sunday by park rangers, WDIV reported. Schossau appeared before a federal magistrate Monday where he was fined $1,000 and ordered to pay court fees.

The memorial in the Black Hills of South Dakota features the faces of President George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln and Theodore Roosevelt sculpted into the granite mountain face.
