Numbers are sometimes altered as public health officials investigate individual cases. Case numbers sometimes do not match numbers provided by respective counties due to several variables, including testing done by private organizations that report to either the state or the county but not both.

Deaths are reported by health care providers and recorded by local health departments. Other data, such as the number of individuals who have recovered at the state level, are released on Saturdays.

More than 9,500 cases have been confirmed in Detroit, which has been proactive in testing since the beginning of the pandemic. The city on Wednesday announced it was doing a second round of testing of residents in its nursing homes, and has seen progress.

Dr. Najibah Rehman, the medical director for the Detroit Health Department, said the department is in the midst of retesting residents in 13 of the city's nursing homes. While facilities had between 30 to 50 percent of those tested test positive during the first round of testing, those figures are declining, Rehman said.

State and federal prisons — which have been the focus of lawsuits as civil rights groups protest the conditions and safety measures put in place to protect inmates from the coronavirus — have not been excluded from the virus. Nearly 2,000 people in state prisons have tested positive for the coronavirus; more than 100 in Michigan's federal facilities have tested positive.
