Michigan Reports 680 New Coronavirus Cases, 50 New Deaths

MICHIGAN — State health officials on Friday released the most recent data relating to the new coronavirus in Michigan, revealing what appears to be more evidence of a plateau in new cases of the virus.

Michigan reported 680 new coronavirus cases Friday, bringing its statewide total to 46,326. The state also reported another 50 deaths from the virus, bringing the state's death toll to 4,393.

However, the numbers continue to decline, as the state posted its first full week without a single day of more than 1,000 new cases since March.

State numbers are released daily at 3 p.m. but are indicative of what has been reported by 10 a.m. that day.

Numbers are sometimes altered as public health officials investigate individual cases. Case numbers sometimes do not match numbers provided by respective counties due to several variables, including testing done by private organizations that report to either the state or the county but not both.

Deaths are reported by health care providers and recorded by local health departments. Other data, such as the number of individuals who have recovered at the state level, are released on Saturdays.

Where the Coronavirus Has Hit Hardest

Southeast Michigan has been the region hit hardest by the coronavirus in the state, but as the pandemic has gone on the virus has spread northeast to more rural counties.

Below is a breakdown of the 10 areas the virus has been most prominent. Detroit continues to lead the state in both confirmed cases and reported deaths. Wayne County, which reports separately from Detroit, continues to post high numbers as well, according to state data.

Back to Work (For Some)

On Thursday, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer announced she had signed an executive order extending the statewide stay-home order to May 28. However, part of the executive order allowed workers in manufacturing jobs to return to work.

In Detroit, Mayor Mike Duggan announced the move allows for the continuation of more than $120 million worth of construction projects that will open to door to 170 affordable housing units in the city.

Contractors will be required to follow the city's coronavirus safe workplace standards, which includes testing employees, workplace distancing, mandatory use of facemasks and thorough sanitation of worksites and vehicles, the mayor said. The workers will receive free testing.

While some people have been allowed to return to work, others have not been as lucky. Nationally, many businesses have taken a toll due to the financial impact of the coronavirus. Recently, Neiman Marcus became the latest retail casualty amid the new coronavirus pandemic. The luxury department store, with a location in Troy, filed Thursday for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, according to multiple reports.
