"Over the past few weeks, we've seen increases in cases across the entire state," she said.
Wednesday's update came the same day Gov. Gretchen Whitmer held a news conference alongside coaches from both the University of Michigan and Michigan State University, all of whom urged residents to wear masks.
Whitmer said the state has seen an uptick in new cases, and in order to get back to where the state was when it had flattened the curve of new cases it was going to need to be a "team effort."
"Michiganders know how to get things done," she said. "We have pushed a curve down before. We have led the nation. We are capable of this. If everyone does their part, we will be successful."
Following Wednesday's coronavirus update, Michigan is ranked thirteenth in the U.S. in coronavirus cases, according to World Health Organization data. The state ranks seventh in the nation in coronavirus deaths.
In the U.S., over 3.5 million cases of the coronavirus have been reported, according to the World Health Organization. Deaths in the U.S. have topped 139,500. Meanwhile, 1.6 million people have recovered from the virus.
More than 13 million cases of the coronavirus have been confirmed worldwide, according to data provided by the World Health Organization. Over 583,000 people have died from the virus around the globe, while nearly 8 million people have recovered from the virus.
The number of new cases has fluctuated over the past seven days, but the number of new cases has increased by more than 300 each day. That uptick is what prompted Gov. Gretchen Whitmer on Tuesday to announce she was extending Michigan's state of emergency through August 11. It was previously set to expire Thursday.
