Police Seek 'Armed And Dangerous' Man In Double Fatal Shooting

Police said the man opened fire and killed two people at the senior living complex where he lived after trying to sexually assault a woman.

DETROIT, MI – The Detroit Police Department is looking for a suspect wanted in connection with a double fatal shooting that took place at a senior living complex on the city’s east side.

At approximately 9:35 p.m. Tuesday, a 30-year old female victim met the suspect, identified by police as James Fleming, at the location at the 800 block of Dickerson, police said. While at the senior living complex where Fleming lives, an argument ensued resulting in a physical altercation. Police said both the suspect and the woman were using cocaine during the incident.

Police said the man attempted to sexually assault the woman and she pulled the fire alarm in desperation. During this altercation, the victim ran outside while being followed by the suspect and fled, police said.

At some point, the suspect allegedly retrieved a handgun, returned to the location and shot and fatally wounded two innocent other victims: a 50-year-old man working as security guard and a 66-year-old woman who lived in the building and was "minding her own business," police said.

Fleming is believed to have fired at least 10 shots during the incident. He is a 69-year-old male with a slim build, short grey hair, and approximately 6-feet, 6-inches tall. He was armed with a revolver, police said, and he’s believed to be armed and dangerous.

“This was certainly a cowardly act,” Chief James Craig said Wednesday.

Craig called the man a “career criminal" and former sex offended who just served a 20-year prison sentence and said the shooting happened “for no apparent reason.”

“My commitment is, we are going to find him,” Craig said, urging him to turn himself in.

After the shooting the suspect fled in an unknown direction driving a dark blue, 2001 Chrysler Town and Country, with a Tennessee license plate 2E58Y0, police said.

If anyone has seen this suspect or knows of his whereabouts they are asked to please call Detroit Police Department or Crime Stoppers at 800-SPEAK-UP.
