METRO DETROIT — A strong weather system will bring rain and snow to the metro Detroit area on New Year's Eve this week, according to the National Weather Service.

Rain moves into the area Tuesday morning with high temperatures in the 40s, before cooler air moves into the region, according to the weather service.

The rain will then shift into snow in most areas across metro Detroit by the afternoon hours when highs fall into the 30s, according to the weather service.

The snow will continue into the nighttime hours before fading away during the overnight hours, according to the weather service.

Forecasters expect less than 1 inch of snow across most areas in metro Detroit by Tuesday night.

Temperatures will then steadily fall through the rest of the week with well-below average temperatures by the weekend, according to the weather service.

Forecasters are also developing data about a possible significant snowmaker by the end of the weekend across southeastern Michigan.
