DETROIT — A professor in the English department at Wayne State University was suspended after a social media post called for violence, Wayne State President Roy Wilson said.

The post said that protesters should be justified in killing speakers with whom they have disagreements with, instead of just "shouting down," Wilson said. Officials did not identify the professor.

"We have on many occasions defended the right of free speech guaranteed by the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, but we feel this post far exceeds the bounds of reasonable or protected speech. It is, at best, morally reprehensible and, at worst, criminal," Wilson said in a statement.
