Weekend Heatwave: Air Quality Alert Issued In Scorching Temps

These hot, muggy days mean extra precautions.

SOUTHEASTERN MICH. — This weekend is going to be a hot one, with temperatures reaching 90 degrees and above both Saturday and Sunday. There’s an Air Quality Alert in effect for Saturday, meaning pollutants are expected to be particularly dangerous for sensitive groups, like children or the elderly, or those with respiratory issues. This impacts residents of St. Clair, Oakland., Macomb, Washtenaw, Wayne, Lenawee and Monroe counties, according to the National Weather Service.

People and businesses are urged to avoid activities which lead to ozone formation on Saturday. These activities include refueling vehicles or topping off when refueling, using gasoline powered lawn equipment and using charcoal lighter fluid. Positive activities include carpooling, biking to work, delaying or combining errands and using water-based paints.

It is recommended that active children and adults, and people with respiratory diseases such as asthma, limit prolonged outdoor exertion.
