Dexter: Cider Mills, Art Festivals & So Much More

Every town has its traditions. Check out these fun facts about what makes Dexter so special.

Dexter is a place like no other. And whether you grew up here, recently moved to the area or you’re just an occasional visitor, you know that Dexter has its own special traditions and history that make it so unique.

A few things to know:

  • Did you know that Dexter was once a booming mill town in the mid-1800s, and the historic Dexter Cider Mill, established in 1886, is one of the oldest continuously operating cider mills in Michigan? Visitors can watch as apples are pressed into delicious cider, sample freshly made donuts and purchase unique gifts and souvenirs.
  • Dexter is also known for its unique art scene, and the Paint Dexter Plein Air Festival is a must-visit annual event for art lovers. This festival, hosted by the Dexter Arts, Culture & Heritage Committee, takes place every August and features competitions, art exhibits, and offers visitors a chance to meet and talk with local artists and purchase one-of-a-kind art pieces.
  • The city of Dexter has a rich history, and the Dexter Area Historical Society Museum is the perfect place to learn more. The museum features exhibits on local history and community life, as well as a genealogical library.
  • Dexter is home to several annual events, including the Dexter Daze Festival, which takes place every August and features live music, food vendors, a parade and a craft show. The free festival is the city's biggest and most accessible community event.
  • The Dexter Farmers Market is open every Saturday from May through October and every Tuesday from June through September. The farmers' markets feature local produce, baked goods, crafts and more.
  • The Gordon Hall Mansion, located in the heart of Dexter, is a beautiful historic home that was built in the mid-1800s. Visitors can take a guided tour of the mansion and learn about its fascinating history and architecture.
  • For a unique shopping experience, head to the Dexter Mill, which has been operating since 1919. The mill offers a wide range of products, including animal feed, bird seed and gardening supplies, as well as unique gifts and souvenirs.
  • If you're looking for a fun way to spend an afternoon, check out the Dexter Creamery, a family-friendly ice cream shop that offers a wide variety of flavors, including some unique seasonal options. Visitors can enjoy their ice cream in the outdoor seating area or take it to go.
  • The Dexter Community Orchestra is a non-profit organization that provides free classical music concerts to the community. Comprised of local musicians of all ages and skill levels, the orchestra performs several concerts each year at various venues throughout Dexter.
  • The Dexter Library is a state-of-the-art facility that offers a wide range of books, movies, music and other resources to the community. In addition to its extensive collection, the library hosts numerous events and programs throughout the year, including author talks, book club and children's storytimes.
  • The Dexter Area Chamber of Commerce is a great resource for anyone looking to learn more about the city and its businesses. The chamber hosts numerous events and programs throughout the year, including networking events, workshops and job fairs and also provides resources and support to local businesses.
  • The Dexter Lions Club is a community service organization that has been serving the Dexter area since 1979. The club hosts numerous fundraisers and events throughout the year, including its Shop with a Cop program, the White Cane project and a Christmas tree lot.
  • The Dexter Rotary Club is a service organization that works to improve the lives of people in the local community and around the world. The club hosts numerous events and fundraisers throughout the year, including a Thanksgiving dinner, an annual jazz night and the Rotate Your Food project.
