Farmington Hills Police Respond to 20-Plus Fireworks Complaints

Residents who discharge fireworks before July 3 and after July 5 are breaking state and local laws.

Since June 26, Farmington Hills Police officers have responded to more than 20 resident complaints about fireworks, coming from all around the city.

The map with this article shows the general locations of the calls; street addresses indicate the blocks from which complaints were made. Some of the pins represent more than one call.

Anyone shooting off fireworks before July 3 was breaking state and local laws. Consumer fireworks can only be used on New Year's Day, Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, Washington's Birthday, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas, along with the days before and after each holiday.

Farmington Hills officials in June approved an emergency ordinance that allows fireworks only from 8 a.m. to 12 a.m. on allowed holidays except New Year's Day, when they may also be discharged between 12 a.m. and 1 a.m. The ordinance's emergency status means it is in place for the Fourth of July holiday.
