Poyner Quietly Striving for State Title

Meet Lake Fenton senior Buddy Poyner and learn about his love of wrestling.

Buddy Poyner doesn’t say much.  The Lake Fenton senior’s only sport is wrestling. His pre-match routine is “pretty lazy.”

However, don’t let his quiet demeanor fool you.

When Poyner gets on the mat, he’s a beast.

He’s ranked No. 2 in Division 3 at 125 pounds, recently won an individual regional crown and has dreams of winning a state championship, but you won’t find Poyner talking any trash about the matter.

“I’m hoping for a state title,” he said. “That’s what I’d like.”

Poyner, who wrestled at Fenton High School as a freshman and sophomore, transferred to Lake Fenton or his junior as senior years.

He has placed third twice and seventh once in the individual state wrestling finals.

“He’s as solid and as focused as they come,” said Lake Fenton coach Vance Corcoran.

Poyner has also won four straight league titles, two in the Metro League and two in the Genesee Area Conference.

“It was cool winning them all,” he said. “It all gets me ready for the end of the year.”

Poyner said the competitive juices are flowing and he’s ready for the challenge.

“We are starting to get really pumped,” Poyner said.

What’s on your IPod? A little bit of everything.

Pre-match ritual? Watch other matches and not talk to anyone.

College plans?  Undecided, I want to wrestle somewhere though.

Outside interests? All we do is wrestle.

Do you ever take a break from wrestling?  Maybe a week or two in the summer.
