Arraignment: Oak Park Treasury Clerk Suspected of Embezzling, Counterfeiting
City officials "looked past financial red flags" in Shemika Terry's history when hiring her to handle money, according to a news report.

An area treasury clerk was reportedly awaiting arraignment Wednesday at the 45th District Court in Oak Park on felony charges of counterfeiting and embezzlement.
The Detroit News cited Oakland County Prosecutor Jessica Cooper with the details of the criminal case, which alleges that Shemika Terry, 32, faces one count of embezzlement by an agent or trustee and one count of possession of counterfeit notes, "with intent to utter or publish."
The first charge covers embezzlement of between $20,000 and $50,000, the story says, and comes with a potential 10-year sentence. The latter charge could include seven years in prison.

"Cooper said Terry’s alleged theft took place between April 28 and May 3; Oak Park city manager Erik Tungate said it took place on a Friday, which would mean the alleged offense took place April 28," the article says. " ... The trust she built over time made the city look past financial red flags in her history when hiring her to a position that handles money, Tungate said."
Terry has been working for the city for more than two years. She has been suspended with pay.
