The City of Ferndale posted a warning to businesses and residents after several people reported receiving an email from employee Scott Worthington, head of the City's Building Department. On the evening of Feb. 28, a number of Ferndale city employees received this email, purporting to be from Worthington:

IT staffers from the city of Ferndale noticed something off about the emails, investigated and found evidence that Worthingtonโ€™s city email account had been targeted by a phishing scam. IT staffers say the email went out to over a thousand people, both city workers and people in the larger community.

A statement posted on the cityโ€™s website warns people not to open this email if youโ€™ve received it. โ€œAs with all phishing and/or scam emails, IT recommends that you delete the message without opening. If you do open the message, do not click on the โ€˜DropBoxโ€™ link,โ€ the statement advises.

Assistant City Manager Joseph Gacioch can answer any questions residents might have about this situation at (248) 546-2525.
