Friday, Dec. 19, 2025: 5 things you need to know (wnem.com) — A Flint resident, Dondre Young, has been appointed to the Michigan Board of Medicine, giving the city a voice on an influential state health body. The same statewide news roundup also covers a proposed school gun-safety course, a major marijuana reclassification order, a University of Michigan athletics investigation, and other high-profile state appointments.
   

2. $3.3M in state grants awarded to mid-Michigan businesses for training (mlive.com) — Millions in new state training grants are headed to businesses in Flint and the surrounding Great Lakes Bay and Thumb region, supporting skills training for both new hires and current workers. The Going PRO Talent Fund awards will help more than 1,600 local employees gain industry-recognized credentials, with officials saying the program boosts wages, strengthens communities, and keeps Michigan competitive in advanced industries.
   

3. Claressa Shields inducted into Michigan Sports Hall of Fame (midmichigannow.com) — Flint boxing star Claressa Shields has been inducted into the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame, adding another major honor to her already historic career. The two-time Olympic gold medalist and multi-division world champion is also expected to headline a February fight in Detroit, giving local fans another chance to cheer on one of Flint’s biggest sports heroes.
   

4. Colombians in theft ring get prison in $266K home burglary in Grand Rapids area (mlive.com) — A nationwide burglary ring tied to over $1.5 million in thefts also hit a Flint Township home, where $50,000 in cash, jewelry and valuables were stolen, according to federal court records. Two members were sentenced to multi-year federal prison terms for a related Grand Rapids-area burglary, with investigators linking the group to similar crimes across several states.
