Grand Rapids is a place like no other. And whether you grew up here, recently moved to the area or you’re just an occasional visitor, you know that Grand Rapids has its own special traditions and history that make it so unique.

A few things to know:

  • Did you know that Grand Rapids was once known as the "Furniture City" due to its thriving furniture industry? In the late 19th century, the city was home to over 40 furniture companies. Today, you can visit the Grand Rapids Public Museum's "Furniture Factory" exhibit to learn more about the industry's history and impact on the city.
  • Grand Rapids is home to the world's largest art competition, ArtPrize, which takes place every fall. The event attracts artists and art enthusiasts from around the world, and over $500,000 in prizes are awarded each year. You can explore the city during ArtPrize to see the artwork displayed in various venues, from museums to coffee shops to parks.
  • The city's founder, Louis Campau, was known for his business savvy and entrepreneurial spirit. He established a trading post in the 1800s and purchased what is now considered the downtown business district of Grand Rapids from the government for $90. Today, you can visit the Louis Campau Promenade, a riverfront park named in his honor, and learn more about his legacy.
  • Grand Rapids has a rich beer brewing history and is home to many award-winning breweries. In fact, the city is celebrating 10 years of being named "Beer City USA.” You can take a brewery tour or visit one of the city's many breweries to sample some of the best craft beer in the Midwest.
  • Grand Rapids is home to the world's first LEED® Gold-certified art museum, the Grand Rapids Art Museum. The building was designed by world-renowned architect Kulapat Yantrasast and features over 6,000 works of art.
