Grosse Pointe Shores Police Honor Fallen Officer
Many police agencies statewide likely participated in a 15-second memorial Tuesday to honor a Kalamazoo officer whose funeral is Tuesday.
Hundreds of officers throughout the state were encouraged by Wayne County Sheriff Benny Napoleon and Michigan State Police to participate in a memorial for a fallen Kalamazoo officer whose funeral began at 11 a.m. Tuesday.
Several officers from police department participated, operating their emergency lights and sirens just outside city hall for a 15-second observance.Β
The officer, Eric Zapata, was shot to death April 18 while trying to come to the aid of another officer. The shooter then shot and killed himself, according to the Officer Down Memorial Page.

An email circulated among police officers statewide urged all law enforcement agencies to participate, especially those who could not attend Tuesday's funeral service at Western Michigan University.
Two firetrucks and three police squad cars sat outside the Shores municipal building at 11 a.m., lit the emergency lights and sounded the emergency sirens. The officers wore black bands over their badges.Β
