Moran Road Gas Line Replacement Likely to Finish By Nov. 22

The replacement of a historically leaky gas line on Moran Road is slated to be complete before Thanksgiving.

In an update to residents, officials announced that the work being completed by DTE on Moran Road is expected to be complete by Nov. 22.

The project, which Farms officials originally said would last about two weeks, began Nov. 1 and motorists were encouraged to find an alternate route as large trucks and work crews would be taking up much of the roadway. The work has also intermittenly closed the road for short periods of time.

DTE spokesman Alejandro Bodipo-Memba said the project is intended to alleviate an on-again-off-again leaky line that serves residents in that area. The replacement thus far has gone smoothly and right on schedule, he said, noting the amount of work involved in a complete replacement of a gas line.

The intentions were to finish the work before the end of November, Bodipo-Memba said, and that is likely to happen.

In early October, after the gasline on Moran Road broke while he was trying to seal it. He was rushed to the emergency room where he was pronounced dead. He and co-workers were out to address the most recent complaint by residents of another possible leak.

The 400 block of Moran has been plagued with problems this year when the Farms combined sewer/storm water removal system was overwhelmed and backed up into hundreds of homes and then the leaky gasline which has been a problem for about four to five years.

Bodipo-Memba said DTE wants to alleviate the problem, which is why they chose complete replacement rather than repair.

Completion of the project by Nov. 22 is dependent on cooperative weather, according to the Grosse Pointe Farms community alert, but is achievable if the weather remains clear.

According to the alert, traffic restrictions remain in place for construction hours, which are 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday. The restrictions include:

  • No parking on the street in the 400 block of Moran
  • the 400 blocks of Mount Vernon and Lothrup streets are closed to through traffic

Street parking is allowed overnight and on the weekends and the roadways that are closed during construction are open to motorists on the weekends as well.
