Public safety department issues Nixle alert warning of IRS telephone scam

Grosse Pointe Woods Public Safety Department officials issued a warning to residents this morning regarding a telephone scam targeting residents throughout the community.
The advisory, sent through the city’s Nixle service, warns residents of an scam involving callers claiming to be Internal Revenue Service agents.
These individuals next demand money from via pre-paid debit cards.

An increase in the frequency of such calls prompted the release of the Nixle alert.
Public safety officials are asking anyone who receives such calls, or any suspicious calls, to report these calls to the United States Treasury Department at (800)-366-4484 or online at https://www.treasury.gov/tigta/contact_report_scam.shtml
