📰 News we're reading

1. Howell denies request for fuel station at former Rite Aid. Here's why (livingstondaily.com) — City officials have rejected a proposal to turn the former Rite Aid on East Grand River into a Wow! Marketplace travel center with gas pumps, a store, and restaurant, citing parking and traffic concerns. Planning commissioners said the site plan didn’t meet city ordinances and borrowed parking from a neighboring business without firm agreements, even as one commissioner argued the lot was simply too small for everything proposed.

2. Vet Services: Be cautious, avoid scams when donating spare change to help veterans (thelivingstonpost.com) — Livingston County Veteran Services is warning Howell-area residents about increasingly sophisticated scams that pose as charities helping veterans, often using fake phone numbers, QR codes, and websites. Before dropping spare change or donating online, locals are urged to call Veteran Services, which can verify organizations and directly connect veterans and families with legitimate financial relief and benefits.

3. Hartland's Emma Kosza learned wrestling quickly after being gymnast (livingstondaily.com) — A Hartland High School junior wrestler is quickly emerging as a force on the local girls wrestling scene, including a strong debut at a tournament in Howell. After switching from gymnastics and moving from Florida, she’s now training with top-ranked boys and competing in events across Livingston County, helping build momentum for future girls wrestling teams in the area.

4. DTE Energy given greenlight to supply power for proposed data center in Saline Township (cbsnews.com) — State regulators have approved DTE Energy’s long-term deal to power OpenAI’s massive new data center in Saline Township, while requiring the company to shield regular customers from higher bills. As Michigan debates where more data centers should go, Howell Township is now part of the conversation, which could eventually influence development and energy planning close to Howell residents.

5. Howell man opts out of trial for fatal shooting of Troy teen (detroitnews.com) — A Howell resident has pleaded no contest to manslaughter and related gun charges in the fatal May shooting of an 18-year-old from Troy, avoiding a trial in Oakland County Circuit Court. The case, which involved a gun believed stolen from a safe and evidence allegedly hidden by a teen, now moves to sentencing early next year, with significant prison time possible.
