Wild Weather Warnings for Southeast Michigan

As temperatures soared into the spring-like 60s Sunday, the National Weather Service (NWS) announced high wind and storm warnings, and a tornado watch, for southeast Michigan. 

At 11:20 a.m., the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center in Norman, OK, issued a tornado watch through 8 p.m. for much of southeast Michigan. A tornado watch is issued to alert people that weather conditions indicate that a tornado could develop in your area. 

Shortly before 10:30 a.m., the NWS issued a high wind warning, in effect from 5 p.m. Sunday to 5 a.m. Monday. In the wake of a cold front expected to move through the area, winds of 30-40 miles per hour, with gusts in excess of 55 miles per hour, are possible this evening. 

According to the NWS, high wind impacts may include:

• tree damage leading to downed power lines and numerous power outages
• weak structures like old barns and sheds being blown down
• travel on north-south roads becoming hazardous in the strong winds, especially for high profile vehicles
