Here are the top three stories in Lansing-East Lansing today:
- Michigan State University announced two new initiatives to follow up on the university's response to the Feb. 13 active shooting incident on campus. First, the university is creating the temporary Office for Resource and Support Coordination, which will be led by two university employees, one who has experience in trauma and the other with experience in emergency operations. The university also hired the Ohio-based firm Security Risk Management Consultants as the firm that will review the response of the university's and law enforcement's responses to the shooting. - Michigan’s Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy has reported that Michiganders have been steadily increasing the amount of waste that they recycle. Currently, the state's recycling percentage is at an all-time high, which is news that comes just in time for Earth Week this week. Currently, Michigan's recycling rate is 21 percent; in 2019, the rate was only 14.25 percent, and in 2022, the rate was 19.3 percent. (WLNS)
- On Monday, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer here in Lansing activated Michigan's State Emergency Operation Center (SEOC) in response to severe flooding that is affecting the state's Upper Peninsula. The flooding is a result of the rapid snowmelt and follows emergency declarations for the Gogebic and Houghton counties on Friday. The SEOC activation will provide emergency resources to better serve the entire area quickly. (WNMU)
