Macomb Teen Receives Congressional Award for Community Service

On May 1, U.S. Rep. Candice Miller (R-District 10) presented the Congressional Award Silver Medal to Macomb resident Ashley Herrington, 17, in honor of her community and personal achievement.

The Congressional Award Foundation is a public-private partnership created by Congress to promote and recognize service, initiative and achievement in America’s youth.

For personal development, she worked on her art skills–earning first place at the Michigan State Fair for both her charcoal and colored pencil drawings. She also picked up an interest in sewing, eventually making her own prom dress.

For physical fitness, Herrington took ice skating lessons and improved her mile time. For her expedition, she planned a rustic camping trip for her family, and took CPR and first aid classes to prepare for the trip.
