Mount Clemens Rotary Donates $13,400 to Help Literacy

For a non-profit organization like Macomb Literacy Partners, every dollar counts — and the $13,400 check the Rotary Club of Mount Clemens gave to MLP during a presentation June 21 will go a long way toward helping combat illiteracy in Macomb County.

"Macomb Literacy Partners is extremely grateful to the Rotary of Mount Clemens for their generous donation," said MLP Director Ken Lampar, in a prepared statement. "This funding will allow us to recruit new volunteer tutors and identify adult learners."

One of the main core programs of Rotary International — of which the Rotary Club of Mount Clemens is part of — is literacy. The Rotary of Mount Clemens has an annual fundraiser benefitting charities, and MLP was chosen as one of the recipients of the donations from this year's March 25 Spring Zing-Tropicale event.

The donation is important to MLP, since more than half of the MLP budget relies on donations. Those donations allow MLP to train volunteer tutors to provide free, one-on-one tutoring to adults in Macomb County who need helping reading and writing English. Most of the adult learners are working to improve their job skills, understand their doctors and prescription information, obtain voter registration cards, get their driver's licenses, acquire library cards and gain citizenship.
