Officials do not believe the infected person has been out in public during the time they were at their most contagious.

MACOMB COUNTY, MI — Another measles case has been confirmed in metro Detroit, health officials said.

Officials said the case has been confirmed in a Macomb County adult who recently visited Ontario, Canada, an area that has been dealing with an outbreak of the disease.

Officials do not believe the infected person has been out in public during the time they were at their most contagious. They did not list any exposure sites.

"Measles is a highly contagious disease and spreads through the air when a person coughs, sneezes or talks," Macomb County Health and Community Services Director/Health Officer Andrew Cox said. "If you are not vaccinated for measles, get vaccinated as quickly as you can. It is important to make sure you protect yourself and loved ones from this vaccine-preventable disease."

This news comes Friday as two other Michigan cases were confirmed in Oakland County and Kent County. It also comes as more than 600 measles cases have been reported across the country from 19 states (including Michigan).

Officials say measles is a highly contagious, vaccine-preventable disease that is spread by direct person-to-person contact and through the air.

Symptoms of measles usually begin within seven to 14 days after exposure and can appear up to 21 days after exposure. They include a high fever, cough, runny nose, red and watery eyes, tiny white spots on the inner cheeks and rashes, officials said.

If symptoms develop, residents are urged to not visit their doctor or emergency room unless they have called ahead so facilities can take precautions to prevent exposure to other people.
