Thieves Target Vacationing Homeowners, Jewelry, Cash Taken in Weekend Break-in

On Aug. 19, at approximately 12:20 p.m., homeowners in the 21000 block of Sunset Drive in Macomb Township reported to the sheriff’s office that someone had broken into their home while they were away for the weekend.

Sheriff’s deputies suspect the intruder, or intruders, entered the home through a locked bedroom window.

The homeowners say jewelry and cash were among the items taken.

There are no suspects at this time, according to the sheriff’s office.

This is the third home invasion in which the homeowners were out of town when the break-in occurred.

Macomb County Sheriff's Det. Sgt. Melissa Stevens said the best advice she can give to homeowners is to buy an alarm system and make sure their home doesn’t give the outward appearance of being empty even if they are planning to be gone for only a short time, such as a weekend.

Stevens suggests doing this by stopping the delivery of newspapers or packages while gone, or leaving a car in the driveway – with the garage door opener and any valuables removed.

While determined intruders will find a way into a home regardless of the homeowner’s precautions, Stevens said residents can take the added step of keeping their valuables out of sight and not in obvious places such as under a bed or in jewelry box on a dresser.

K9 officer sniffs out marijuana in Macomb traffic stop

On Aug. 17, at approximately 2:38 a.m., a 22-year-old Shelby Township man and 20-year-old New Baltimore man were arrested for possession of marijuana in Macomb Township, according to the Macomb County Sheriff’s Office.

A sheriff’s deputy stopped the pair’s vehicle near Hall Road and Romeo Plank. Upon approaching the car, the deputy noticed the odor of marijuana and a K9 officer later confirmed the presence of marijuana in the vehicle.

The Shelby Township man was found with marijuana in his pocket and a glass pipe and marijuana were found with the New Baltimore man, according to the sheriff’s report.

Both were arrested for possession of marijuana and taken to the Macomb County Jail.

18-year-old foursome arrested for marijuana possession

On Aug. 18, at approximately 2:04 a.m., four 18-year-olds, three from Macomb Township and one from Washington Township, were arrested for possession of marijuana in Macomb Township, according to a sheriff’s report.

A sheriff’s deputy stopped the teens’ vehicle in the area of Howard and Huntington streets and upon approaching the vehicle, noticed the odor of marijuana.

Marijuana was found on all four. The teens were arrested for possession of marijuana and taken to the Macomb County Jail.
