3 Northville Students are Finalists for Student-Athlete Awards

Northville is one of only three communities to have three finalists for the Michigan High School Athletic Association's Scholar-Athlete Award.

Three Northville students are finalists for the Michigan High School Athletic Association's (MHSAA) Scholar-Athlete Award for the 2011-12 school year.

Andrew Poterala, Gina McNamara and Alec Latta of are among 120 students in the state who are finalists, according to an MHSAA press release. Northville is one of three communities with the distinction of having three students named as finalists. In total, the MHSAA received 1,636 applications for the award.

Thirty-two recipients will receive the award. Class A's, the class under which Northville falls, scholarship recipients will be announced on Feb. 21 on the MHSAA website.

According to the press release: "The program, which has been recognizing student-athletes since the 1989-90 school year, will honor 32 individuals from MHSAA member schools who participate in at least one sport in which the Association sponsors a postseason tournament. Farm Bureau Insurance underwrites the Scholar-Athlete Award, and will present a $1,000 scholarship to each recipient. Since the beginning of the program, 544 scholarships have been awarded."
