About the National Merit Scholarship program
The NMSP is an academic recognition competition that began in 1955. Approximately 1.5 million students enter the scholarship program each year, with about one percent of those students ultimately being named finalists.
These students are the highest scoring entrants in each state and meet high academic standards, along with other requirements. Finalists qualify for the National Merit Scholarship.

Three types of National Merit Scholarships will be offered in the spring. All finalists compete for one of the 2,500 National Merit $2,500 Scholarships. Those are awarded on a state-representational basis. About 1,000 corporate-sponsored Merit Scholarship awards come from more than 240 corporations and business organizations for finalists who meet their specified criteria. Approximately 200 colleges and universities also finance some 4,800 Merit Scholarship awards for finalists who will attend the sponsor institution.
