Northville Council Approves New Cars for Cops

The Northville City Council approved the purchase of two new vehicles for its police fleet at its meeting Monday evening. Police Chief Gary Goss said Northville Police had two 2008 Ford Crown Victoria vehicles that needed replacing.

"They have more than $80,000 miles on them," he said.

Goss said the department looked into purchasing Chevy Impalas but found them to be impractical. They decided on one Ford Taurus Police Interceptor, which will cost $29,756, and one 2013 Chevy Tahoe, which will cost $26,474.25.

City Manager Pat Sullivan said he spoke with police officials in Plymouth about their vehicle choices.

"They said they're going to split between Tahoes and sedans," he said. "They serve different purposes."

Goss said the Taurus will be good for maneuverability and the Tahoe will be good for purposes such as transporting equipment.

Fish Hatchery Park Tennis Court to Get Updated

The council approved the plan to renovate Fish Hatchery Park's tennis court and fence, which Parks and Recreation Director Jason Spiller said are in poor condition. He said the fence removal and replacement and painting costs would not exceed $43,276. 

"The court itself is in need of repairs," he said.

The council also approved plans to fix the many cracks in the court for not more than $19,090. Racket Sports won the bid for the renovation.

No Lights On High Street

Joe Boelter, of 124 High St., said during citizen comments that there are no street lights on High Street between Dunlap and Main streets.

"DTE promised we'd have the lights come Halloween, which has come and passed," said Jim Gallogly, director of public works.

He said he spoke with DTE again and they said they will come this week and will take about three days to fix the lights.

Other Items

• The council approved the adoption of new by-laws of the Alliance of Rouge Communities, which is a network of about 38 communities that work together to deal with watershed issues. The Alliance created new policies in the last five years and wanted 501(c)(3) status, which is why the by-laws had to be changed. 
• The council approved the 2013 contract extension with Trinity Transportation for the Northville Public Schools Ski and Snowboard Club. The contract would cost $560 for each motor coach and $450 for each school bus, Spiller said.
