Crime Report: Driver Leads Police on High-Speed Chase

A man was arrested on charges of fleeing and eluding police and resisting an officer after he failed to pull over for a traffic stop and led the officer on a high-speed chase Dec. 17 at 2 a.m., according to a police report. 

The officer was on routine patrol on Grand River Avenue approaching Haggerty Road when he saw the driver go through a red light and pass him at a high speed. The police officer activated his emergency lights. Approximately half a mile later, he activated his siren. The car made no attempt to stop and increased its speed to 80 mph in a 50 mph zone, the report said. 

The car then approached a red light at Meadowbrook Road and stopped before proceeding through the red light, the report said. The police officer continued to follow the car, which was now averaging 60 mph.

The car then turned onto a side street and pulled into a parking space, and the officer pulled up behind the car. After stopped, the driver got out of the car, concealing his hands. The officer drew his weapon and ordered the man to put his hands up several times, but did not comply, the report said. The officer noted in his police report that the man seemed to be looking around trying to find an escape.

The driver then began running toward an apartment building and tried to open an apartment door, while the officer followed on foot. The officer feared the man might be trying to commit a home invasion to evade him, so he tackled him away from the door, the report said. The police later discoved that this was the man's apartment.

The officer and the man both fell to the ground, and the officer fell on top of the man. The officer then radioed his location for assistance. The man refused the officer’s commands to roll onto his stomach and give him his arms, the report said. Once another officer arrived to assist, they were able to handcuff the subject and bring him to the police station.

The police could smell intoxicants on the man, but he refused to take a breathalyzer or chemical test, the report said. The police then obtained a search warrant to administer a blood draw, the report said.

The man was arrested on charges on fleeing or eluding police, resisting an officer, operating while intoxicated and driving while license suspended.

License plate stolen

A man reported that his license plate was stolen of his car while he was eating at on Nine Mile Road, according to a police report. The man noticed the plate was missing when he left the restaurant at 4:30 p.m. on Dec. 15. The plate has not been found by any police agency but has been marked as stolen.

Car spray painted

A man reported that has car was spray painted while it was parked in front of his house on Nantucket Drive Dec. 16, according to a police report. The man left his house with friends at 7 p.m. and when he returned around midnight, he found  the image of male genitalia was spray painted on the hood of his car, the report said. The police do not have any suspects or witnesses.
