Novi Receives International Geographic Information Systems Award

The City of Novi was honored among 140 distinguished communities and organizations using innovative location based technologies at the 2012 Esri International User Conference.

Novi was recognized for promoting public access to interactive, content-rich online maps and integrating location based technology throughout the city’s business applications. Most recently, Novi deployed a Cityworks asset management system, leveraging both cloud hosted and internally managed systems to reduce costs, increase accountability, and generate performance metrics for city employees throughout all field service areas. The project was selected after an extensive five-year evaluation of the best asset management practices adopted by communities across the nation.

“Our new asset management system will accurately represent the cost of providing the services our community members expect, and will help us extend the life of Novi’s roads, water and sanitary system infrastructure by continually tracking expenditures while applying preventative maintenance practices,” stated Rob Hayes, City Engineer and Director of Public Services.

Chief Information Officer Rob Petty said, “The value of leveraging location-based, asset management technology across multiple service areas to efficiently capture, respond and satisfy calls for over 110 types of citizen requests and work orders advances City Council’s goals of improving citizen service delivery while maintaining fiscal responsibility.”

The asset management system is currently being used within the city’s Department of Public Services (DPS) and is designed to be extended to other types of public works including storm water, sidewalk, and street tree management systems.

The City of Novi’s DPS maintains over 200 miles of roads, 306 miles of water mains, 245 miles of sanitary mains, and has over 13,000 water and sewer utility service customers.
