Bike vs. Car: Who Will Reach Library First?

With all of the construction around Rochester Hills, we tested our theory that a bike might be the fastest way to travel during rush hour.

We had the same destination: the .

We traveled the same distance: according to our RunKeeper maps that kept track on our iPhones, our routes were each about 3.5 miles.

But here's where our little test gets fun.

Wednesday afternoon, in the height of the always-hectic 5 o'clock traffic, Rochester Patch Editor Kristin Bull drove to the library to return some books. She started at the and traveled east down the construction-laden Walton Boulevard.

At the same time (check out the "ready, set, go" coordination in the accompanying video), Oakland Township Patch Editor Jen Anesi biked the Paint Creek Trail to the library. She started at the Silverbell Road crossing in Oakland Township.

Same distance — and both were pretty much a straight shot.

Who do you think got there first?

Both editors asked for predictions on their Patch Facebook pages.

"Heck, the bike made it first, no worries there," reader James Hoffman responded.

"Bike rider, traffic around Walton is the worst I have ever been in," reader Elizabeth Conroy-Powers posted.

With and the because of bridge problems, traveling east to west in the cities has been slow going this summer.

"Walton is a nightmare and so is Avon anywhere near Livernois," reader Lisa Szappoon Brady posted.
