Heat Index to Reach 100 Degrees Today, up to 110 Thursday

As the longest heatwave since July 1995 continues, the National Weather Service in Detroit/Pontiac has issued an excessive heat warning effective until 10 p.m. Thursday.

Temperatures will climb into the middle to upper 90s again today and tomorrow, though high humidity could cause the heat index to climb above 100 degrees today.

The hottest weather, according to the weather service, will be Thursday, when the heat index could reach 105 or 110 degrees – rivaling heat index values in Phoenix, AZ.

The weather service recommends taking extra precautions, such as drinking more water, limiting outside exposure, staying in the shade, wearing light and loose-fitting clothing, taking frequent breaks and resting in shaded or air-conditioned environments.

An air quality alert is also in effect through Wednesday, spurring another Ozone Action Day. Residents are encouraged to refrain from refueling vehicles, using gasoline-powered lawn equipment and using charcoal lighter fluid. Children and adults with respiratory diseases such as asthma should also limit outdoor exertion, says the weather service.
