New Animal Adoption Center Approved for County

Oakland County commissioners give the go-ahead to new $15.4 million facility near sheriff's office

Oakland County commissioners voted 18-1 to approve the sale of bonds to fund a new home for the Oakland County Animal Control and Pet Adoption Center.

The $15.4 million project will break ground in the spring of 2016 according to a report in C & G Newspapers.

The current facility is 40 years old and costs an estimated $1.4 million to maintain each year.

The new facility is slated to be a state-of-the-art animal welfare facility with improvements to heating and air condition and ventilation systems, which will help reduce airborne illnesses within the facility.

Enhanced dog runs, and improved medical facilities are also included in the design.

The new facility will be located on a parcel of land near the Oakland County Sherrif’s offices, and once the facility is operational, the parcel of land the old facility reside on can be sold and those funds (estimated to be about $4.5 million) can be returned to the tax roll.

The Oakland County Animal Control and Pet Adoption Center currently handles about 5,400 animals annually.
